Note that the dyke of the Dutch was built at the beginning of the XVIIth century under the orders of Humfrey Bradley, following an order of Henri IV of 1599 to clean up the marshes of France.
Above the house stands a frustoconical clod of earth, known as a feudal clod. Built by the Vikings in the 10th century, they erected a wooden fort at the top. From there, they could watch over the entire Marais Vernier. These Danish Vikings had arrived by the Seine around 841 and had colonized all the north-east of Normandy in 70 years. Without any help from their Swedish and Norwegian brethren.
However, the latter will conquert a small territory north of the Cotentin. From the millenium, these Normans of Cotentin will extend their reign over all of southern Italy and Sicily.
The Treaty of Saint Clair-sur-Epte signed on 911, will mark the beginning of the conquest by the first dukes of this territory. Then they will form the present-day Normandy. The independent duchy will last three centuries. From 1066, the Dukes of Normandy will also be Kings of England.
Five hundred years later, at the end of the « Hundred Years War », the English put the feudal motte back into service. As evidenced by stone cannonballs found at the site in 1950. The English occupants built this house with three large hearths for the guards of the fortification.
A thousand years later, the village elders still called this work “Le Fort” ! It was decided to name the estate “La Maison du Fort”, in order to perpetuate this historic term.
